Abstract

The invention of the parent Specification is extended to carbinols of the formula <FORM:0682561/IV (b)/1> and their esters and salts as before; R is an amino group (1) substituted by two alkyl groups each of 2-5 carbon atoms; (2) substituted by a C1-C3 alkyl group and by a cycloalkyl group; or (3) substituted by two groups forming a saturated ring; R1 is a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon residue; Ar is a phenyl group with or without substituents; Py is a 2-pyridyl residue; R2 is a straight or branched alkyl group. The carbinols are made from nitriles via ketones as in the parent Specification. In the examples: (1) 1-diethylamino-3-phenyl-3-a -pyridyl-hexanone-4 is obtained from a -phenyl-a -pyridyl-g -diethylaminobutyronitrile and ethyl magnesium bromide; the ketone is reduced to the carbinol and esterified with acetic, propionic and butyric anhydrides; (2) 1 - (N - methyl - N - cyclopentylamino) - 3 - phenyl - 3 - a - pyridyl - heptanone - 4 is obtained as above, reduced to the carbinol and converted into the propionic ester; the corresponding cyclohexyl compounds are made similarly; (3) 1-pyrrolidino-3-phenyl-3-a -pyridyl-hexanone-4 is produced as above, reduced to the carbinol and esterified with propionic anhydride; (4) 1-piperidino-4-phenyl-4-a -pyridyl-heptanone-5 is obtained similarly, reduced to the carbinol and converted into its acetic ester.
