Abstract
681,826. Stuffing-box substitutes. NEWELL & CO., Ltd., E., and HOWDEN, P. Jan. 9, 1951 [Jan. 28. 1950], No. 2293/50. Class 122(v) A sealing device for the shell 7 of a rotary kiln comprises an annular plate 9 surrounding the shell with a small gap 10, a number of sealing plates 19 that bear against one face of the annular plate 9, are curved on their inner edges 32 to the external curvature of the shell, and are resiliently urged into contact with the shell, the total length of the inner edges 32 being equal to the circumference of the shell and a divergent space being provided between the ends 28 of adjacent sealing plates. The annular plate 9, which is formed by the outer flange of a heat-resisting ring 6 attached at its inner end to the wall 17 of the kiln combustion chamber, has an external rim 20 acting as a distance piece for a cover plate 21 encircling the sealing plates 19 that are urged into contact with the shell by leaf springs 26 whose pressure can be adjusted by screws 22. The ends 28 of each sealing plate are parallel to each other and non-radial guides such as pins 30, 31 of different diameters or tapered strips are provided in the spaces 29 between the ends of adjacent plates.
