Abstract

Sheet material suitable for floor and wall coverings is made by heating at 300-350 DEG F. a composition comprising 50-75 per cent by weight of a filler consisting of a pigment and a fibrous material, the latter in the proportion of not more than 50 per cent by weight of the filler, and 25-50 per cent of a polymer and plasticizer therefor, the polymer being selected from polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral and a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, forming the heated composition into a sheet and allowing to cool. Optionally the composition may contain a small amount of a lubricant, e.g. basic lead carbonate, silicate or stearate and stearic acid. Pigments mentioned are asbestine, barytes, calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, clay, dolomite, mica, silica, slate flour, serpentine, talc, chrome green, chrome yellow, carbon black and titanium dioxide. The fibrous filler may be asbestos, cork, wood flour, cellulose fibres or animal fibres such as leather. Specified plasticizers are tricresyl phosphate, dioctyl phthalate, dicapryl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, dibutoxy ethyl phthalate, dibutoxy-glycol phthalate, polyethyleneglycol di-2-ethyl hexoate, and triethylene-glycol di-2-ethyl hexoate.
