Abstract

A drying oil pitch and a viscous petroleum polymer of molecular weight between 200 and 600 and consisting principally of polymerised highly unsaturated olefinic hydrocarbons, having an iodine number of between 80 and 200 and being substantially non-acid and non-saponifiable, are heated together at not above 300 DEG F. to give a blended product, free from vulcanizing agents. The amount of polymer is between 10 and 50 per cent. A filler e.g. asbestos, silica, talc and whiting may be present in an amount between 1 and 3 times that of the blend. Driers and colouring agents may also be present, a long list of the latter being given. Pitches specified are those from cottonseed, linseed or tall oil. Plasticisers e.g. dehydrated castor oil, may also be included. The blend is used as a coating.
