680,350. Beams. COFF, L. Oct. 25, 1949 [Oct. 29, 1948], No: 27361/49. Classes 20(ii) and 20(iv. A rolled steel or other metal section 111, resting on supports 113, 114 is reinforced by tensioned cables 115a, 115b anchored at the ends of the section 111 at points below the top flange or surface, and passing under stays 120 provided adjacent to the lower surface of the section. The section may be of I-form, the cables 115a, 115b being one on each side of the vertical web. Buckling of the section is prevented by making the stays 120 of inverted U-shape positively to locate the cables, the stays being held between the central vertical web of the section and braces 121 arranged between the flanges of the I. In-situ or prefabricated concrete is laid upon the section 111, the tension in the cables being adjusted accordingly. When in-situ concrete is applied, the bond with the metal may be increased by roughening the latter, or by providing anchoring means thereon. Additional cables may be provided, for example, the brackets 117 may be arranged each to receive two cables, or, as shown in Fig. 4, the additional cables 125a may bear, by means of anchor plates 126, on the ends of the hardened concrete. In a modification, a U-sectioned member 111 has tensioned cables within the limbs of the U, prefabricated concrete, shaped to engage the upper edges of the limbs, being rested upon the section. Specification 650,030 is referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the reinforcements 7, Fig. 4 (Cancelled) of aligned beams are joined by a turnbuckle 13, and in Fig. 5a (Cancelled) the steel beam 1 is reinforced by a tension member 20 provided with a turnbuckle 21. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
