Abstract

680,108. Pneumatic springs. DOULGHERIDIS, A. M. Feb. 4, 1949 [Feb. 13, 1948], No. 3147/49. Class 108 (iii). [Also in Group XXXIV] Hydropneumatic devices for wheel tyres and other shock-absorbers or dampers comprise one or more flexible air chambers surrounded by liquid contained in a flexible hermeticallyclosed casing to which the load &c. is applied. Fig. 3 shows an application of the device to replace vehicle springs in which the flexible casing 3 containing liquid surrounding an airtube 5 is fitted between supports 11, 12 on the vehicle chassis and axle respectively. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the axle-member 12 is supported on the flexible wall 3 of an otherwise rigid casing 13, 16, 16a, the airchamber 5 being housed in the extension portion 16, 16a. In all cases, means such as an impermeable cover may be provided to limit the distension of the air-chamber; and, means may be provided to retard return flow of the load-displaced liquid so that the device acts as a dash-pot.
