Abstract
679,426. Optical elements. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 20, 1950 [Sept. 23, 1949], No. 23102/50. Class 97 (i). [Also in Group V] A method of manufacturing optical elements in which a coating of a material which is gelatinizable by reducing the' temperature is cast in a mould on a substratum substantially to prevent lateral contraction of the casting during manufacture, is gelatinized, removed from the mould and dried, the mould being profiled such that the free surface of the coating is aspherical, is characterized in that the cast coating consists of water-insoluble material dissolved in an organic liquid. Suitable materials are celluloseacetate-butyrate or cellulose-acetato-propionate dissolved in a mixture of toluene, xylene and isopropanol. Softening agents such as tricresyl phosphate may be added to change the refractive index of the coating. Fig. 3 shows a mould 3 shaped to produce an aspherical correcting plate for a Schmidt system, ducts 4 and 5 allowing heating or cooling liquid to be supplied and a duct 6 admitting the material 7 as described in Specifications 614,255 and 626,530. The substratum 2 may be of glass or transparent plastic and the final elements may consist of the dried coating and substratum or the coating may be used separately. In a mirror a metallic reflecting layer may be provided between the coating and the substratum.
