583,091. Moulding lenses from plastics. KING- STON, A. W., and JOHNSON, J. Dec. 31, 1943, No. 21931. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] In a method of making meniscus lenses from blanks of transparent plastic material such as methyl methacrylate polymer or polystyrene, the blank is left flat on one side, the diameter of the blank is slightly less (about 3 per cent. less) than the diameter of the finished moulded lens, and the power of the blank is slightly greater (about 3 per cent. greater) than the power of the finished moulded lens. Thus the positive meniscus blank shown in Fig. 2 is left flat on the side 14 and is curved on the side 13. The radius of curvature of the side 13 is given by the formula where R1 is the radius of the surface 11, Fig. 1, of the finished lens and R2 is the radius of the surface 12. Details are given also concerning the radii of curvature of one face of blanks which are to be moulded into a negative meniscus lens and a meniscus lens which has a correction for astigmatism.
