Abstract

575,098. Fused silica. QUARTZ & SILICE. Jan. 20, 1942, No. 819. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1941. [Class 56] In the manufacture of articles of fused silica, a plate 1 of that material is supported on an annular member 2 having notches 3 and dividing a furnace into upper and lower portions. The lower portion contains an adjustably mounted electric arc 17 carried by a block 21 adjustably mounted on two groups of slides 23, 24. The upper portion is formed by semicircular walls pivotally mounted on a vertical axis, whereby the upper portion may be opened to give access to the plate 1. After glazing the lower face, the plate is turned over to glaze its other face. The plate is then moulded by means of a mould or former acting on its upper face.
