Abstract

In order to facilitate the separation of <PICT:0679216/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0679216/IV (a)/2> bundles of filaments in a tow of rayon or other synthetic fibres, a cross-thread or cross-strip is passed through an end of the tow in a sinuous line transversely to the length of the tow. The thread or strip may pass under and over the filament bundles, as 411, 421, Fig. 3, or be adhered to them on one side only, as 431, Fig. 7. In an example, filament bundles are taken from a large number of spinning points and arranged parallel to one another in an apparatus wherein alternate filament bundles may be raised and lowered by guides operated by pedal mechanism. A shuttle introduces a cross-thread, preferably coloured, at each of these positions. The bundles are then grouped to form a tow and may be cross-wound into a ball, or coil, after which they may be subjected to physical or chemical treatments. Cross-threads may be inserted in pairs at both ends of the tow. In another example, a number of spinning points, each having 2400 apertures, deliver filaments which are grouped roughly into bundles of 600 filaments. The bundles are passed through individual thread guides and over a strip of adhesive fabric or paper, which may be applied to the bundles mechanically or by hand. At the same time a second strip can be applied from above so as to cover the adhesive parts exposed between the bundles, or a substance that removes the adhesive can be sprayed or sprinkled on these parts.
