Abstract
410,745. Stapling continuous filaments by drawing. DREYFUS, H., 22, Hanover Square, London. Nov. 12, 1932, No. 32030. [Class 120 (iii).] Staple fibres are produced from continuous filaments by rendering the filaments temporarily brittle by cooling, and breaking them into short lengths whilst in that state, whereby breakage is effected without impairing the extensibility of the filaments. The cooling, e.g. to -5‹ C., may be effected by passing cooled brine or liquid air through a hollow roller with which the filaments contact. The breaking may be performed continuously with drawing, so that the continuity of the bundle is preserved ; twisting may also be effected in the same operation. A false twist may be imparted to the fibres, and a device may be provided for supporting the bundle between successive pairs of drawing rollers, e.g. an endless band. Several filamentary bundles may be led side by side, and may be doubled if desired. Filamentary bundles 5 from bobbins 6 pass through guides 7, over the hollow roller 10 through which a refrigerant is passed. The temporarily brittle filaments are then broken by drawing between the rollers 19, 20 and 21, 22, and the sliver twisted, with or without further drawing, by the flyers 9, or by a ring device. The filaments may be moistened by passing over wicks 26 before cooling, so that the moisture freezes and causes greater brittleness. The brittleness is preferably removed immediately after the drawing operation by jets of hot air. According to the Provisional Specification, roughening media, e.g. kieselguhr, talc, pumice, carborundum or emery, or soluble roughening media, e.g. such as described in Specification 372,797 may be applied to or incorporated in the filaments, preferably before breaking, and hygroscopic media, e.g. those described in Specification 387,003 may also be applied.
