Abstract
<PICT:0652645/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0652645/IV (a)/2> Viscose is extruded into a coagulating bath and the thread obtained is subjected to a stretching of at least 150 per cent, led over at least one feed roller, and caused to travel in the wet state for 3 or more metres in air in a straight or sinous path between the last feed roller, or between the point where the thread reaches the last feed roller, and the winding device at a rate such that the travel lasts for a period of at least 3 seconds, and under tension such that the length of the thread is maintained substantially constant. The long air path allows internal tensions set up by the stretching operation to be relieved before the thread reaches the winding device. This may be a centrifugal pot or a bobbin or reel. The thread may pass directly to the winding device or may first pass through a washing bath. The thread may travel at 75-100 metres per minute and the air path may be 3-10 or more metres in length. A solution of 55 or more per cent of sulphuric acid may be used for the coagulating bath, and the thread may be stretched in presence of this acid or in a following bath of hot water. The threads obtained may have a tenacity of 4, 5, or more grams per denier and an extensibility of 9-10 per cent. As shown in Fig. 1, a thread 3 after leaving feed rolls 1, 2, describes a sinuous path by passing round deviating rods, rollers, wheels, or similar devices 4-8 before entering the funnel 9 of the spinning pot 10. The path of the thread may be increased by causing it to travel in loops round roller 2. As shown in Fig. 2, viscose is extruded from nozzle 23 and the thread 3 is formed in bath 22 which contains sulphuric acid of 55 per cent strength. The thread is stretched between feed rollers 25 and 2 by 200 per cent. It then traverses roller 2 in an axial direction in a number of loops, the spacing being maintained by the inclined rod 26. The thread may pass round roller 25 one or more times. It passes from roller 2 to a washing bath 27, and then to a centrifugal spinning pot 10.
