Abstract
<PICT:0389336/IV/1> <PICT:0389336/IV/2> <PICT:0389336/IV/3> Continuous structures such as artificial filaments, horsehair, and films, are obtained from solutions, particularly cellulose solutions, in such manner that the solution issuing from comparatively wide openings traverses in substantially straight path first an air space and then a body of strongly acting setting liquid and the filament or film is stretched before its entry into the setting liquid by the pull of the coagulated product. The stretch may be applied by rollers or similar devices arranged at some distance from the plastic part of the filaments and even outside the setting bath, the hardened part of the filaments transmitting the stretching force to the plastic part. As shown in Fig. 1, cuprammonium cellulose solution is extruded through a nozzle 2 and after passing some distance through the air enters a precipitating liquid contained in trough 5. The thread rapidly coagulates in the strongly acting liquid and is deviated from the vertical round a rod 4. After traversing the bath in a horizontal direction it is led out of the bath and cross-wound on a reel. The drawing speed of the reel imparts a tension which extends back to the nozzle and stretches the plastic part of the filament. As shown in Fig. 2, a film is extruded from a slit in the pouring-device 7 and traverses an air path and a path through the strongly acting setting bath 9 in a straight line. It then passes over rollers 10 . . 12 and is led to a winding device. As shown in Fig. 4, spinning solution from a pipe 14 passes to a number of spinning-heads 15 each of which is provided with several nozzles 20. The filaments from each spinning-head are passed through the air and a sufficient depth of setting liquid for coagulation to take place so that when they are brought together to form a thread on the deviating rod 16 undesirable mutual adhesion is prevented. Caustic soda solution may be used as the strongly acting setting liquid.
