Abstract

<PICT:0772865/IV(a)/1> A thread of artificial filaments issues from a spinneret immersed in an acid or other coagulating bath, and after leaving that bath the thread is passed around and completely encircles a godet wheel or roller which is immersed or partially immersed in a bath of dilute acid for further coagulation. It is then caused to pass around and traverse along a process roller, the process of coagulation being allowed to continue during the first portion of the thread travel along the roller, and washing being effected during the second portion of the traverse. The thread is then passed around and traversed along a drying roller and thereafter wound on to a bobbin or other support. A guide rod may be provided to keep apart that portion of the thread passing on to the godet from that passing from the godet to the process roller. The process roller may be disposed with its axis at right angles to the axis of the godet wheel and the axis of the drying roller may be parallel to the axis of the godet wheel. Separate godet wheels and process rollers may be provided for each thread but the drying roller may extend along the length of the machine for a distance sufficient to accommodate several or even all of the threads. As shown, the thread 5 issues from the spinneret 3 and travels upwardly through the coagulating path 1 and to a guide 11 from whence it passes to and around a godet wheel 7. The godet wheel is partially immersed in a bath 9 for assisting the coagulation, e.g. a hot bath of dilute acid. The thread passes from the godet wheel to a process roller 13 and its associated traverse roller 15 and it is advanced axially in a large number of loops. The traverse roller is arranged in an inclined and skewed manner with respect to roller 13. During the first portion of the traverse, completion of the coagulation of the thread is allowed to take place, and during the rest of the traverse, the thread is washed with water which is delivered on to the roller from pipe 17. From roller 13, the thread travels to a drying roller 19 and its associated traverse roller 21 and is advanced axially in a large number of loops. The dried thread is wound on to a bobbin 23.
