Abstract
678,958. Tobacco pipes. ARNOLD, E. G. March 19, 1951 [March 23, 1950], No. 7303/50. Class 130. A tobacco pipe has a ball joint connection between the mouthpiece and stem which allows the stem to be set in different angular positions relative to the mouthpiece and maintains the stem in the adjusted positions when so set. As described, applied to a briar pipe of the kind having the stem and mouthpiece joined by a cylindrical metal mount with an in-turned flange at the mouthpiece end, the mount acts as the outer casing of the ball joint and, before screw or push assembly on the stem or insertion within a recess therein, receives through its wide end (a) a ball of similar metal having a screwed extension which projects through the narrow end of the mount for attachment to the mouthpiece by threaded engagement with a bore therein, (b) a rubber washer and (c) a holding washer slotted to receive a screwdriver head and externally threaded to screw into the mount by co-action with threads therein. A smoke passage passes through the ball and extension, and is countersunk at the ball end to allow a free draught in any joint position. The mouthpiece end adjacent the mount is concave so as to move with clearance about the mount end. The mount may be of silver, duralumin or, according to the Provisional Specification, gold.
