678,750. Lathe details. WICKMAN, Ltd., A. C. April 4, 1951 [April 28, 1950], No. 10465/50. Class 83 (iii). A tool-slide actuating mechanism for an automatic lathe &c. adapted to effect a rapid movement up to the work, a relatively slow feed during cutting, and a rapid return, comprises the combination of a slide-actuating rack, a pinion or quadrant in engagement with the rack, a primary lever, a secondary lever pivoted on the primary lever, adjustable means interconnecting the secondary lever and the pinion &c., a toggle mechanism for actuating the primary lever, and cams for actuating the toggle and the secondary lever. A tool-slide a, co-operating with a work-spindle o, carries a rack b engaging a quadrant c: the latter is connected through linkage d, e, by an adjustable pivot member g to the arm h of a bent lever, the other arm f of which carries a roller k engaging a cam-track m. This lever, referred to as the secondary lever, is pivoted intermediate its ends to the end of a primary lever i which at its other end is pivoted at j to a fixed bracket. On the free end of the primary lever i, on the side opposite the pivot for the secondary lever, one end of a toggle linkage p, q is pivoted. The opposite end of the toggle linkage is pivoted at a fixed point r. A roller s on the upper toggle link q engages a cam groove t cut in the face of a disc n opposite the face with the cam groove m. Fig. 1 shows the mechanism in the withdrawn position of the tool-slide a. The toggle links are first brought by the cam disc into alignment for the quick approach, the free end of the primary lever i thus being brought into engagement with a stop-member u. The relatively slow cutting movement is effected by rotation of the secondary lever f and finally both cams effect the rapid return movement. The mechanism aims at reducing the load imposed on the cams while the tool is cutting. A second tool slide may be actuated from the secondary lever h by linkage similar to that for the tool-slide a.
