[Also in Group XV] Feelers and detectors.-An autographic register or like writing machine is provided with a signalling or warning device to indicate when the carbon roll is substantially exhausted, the means for actuating the device comprising a lever oscillated each time the register is operated, the extent of the oscillation being controlled in accordance with the diameter of the carbon roll so that when the supply is nearly exhausted the lever moves sufficiently to actuate the warning device. As shown, the spindle 4 of the carbon roll a is positioned in slots 5 in a casing 1 and the carbon paper b is drawn off by feed rollers 2. The free edge 8 of a pivoted plate 7 rests on the roll and carries a pin 9 supporting a pin 13 on one arm 10 of a bellcrank lever 10, 11, pivoted at 12, and oscillated at each operation of the register by a crank 21 on a shaft 22 carrying a disc 3 for feeding a form length of stationery at each operation. The arm 11 engages a pin 17 on a hammer 16 pivoted at 18 and biassed by a spring 19 towards a bell 20, so that the hammer 16 is oscillated by the lever 10, 11. The limitation of the movement of the arm 10 by the pin 9 prevents the hammer from striking the bell until the carbon roll is nearly exhausted and the pin 9 has dropped sufficiently to permit of the necessary extent of movement. A pin 14 on the arm 10 moves over a scale 15 to afford a visual indication of the amount of carbon paper remaining on the roll. Longitudinal tensioning.-The plate 7 also serves to maintain the carbon paper taut as it is drawn across the writing plate, undue strain on the paper being prevented due to the release of the pressure of the pin 13 on the pin 9 when the arm 10 is raised at each register operation.
