Abstract

629,252. Printing-machines; sheet delivery apparatus. BOBST ET FILS SOC. ANON., J. April 18, 1946, No. 12090. Convention date, April 23, 1945. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] In a delivery mechanism for printing and other machines a feeler is arranged to engage the uppermost sheet of a pile of sheets and to control the angular movement of an oscillating member operatively connected to a means for controlling the lowering of the pile, such that the lowering means is inoperative until a predetermined height of the pile is reached, operative when this height is reached, and, when the pile exceeds a certain height, the machine is stopped by the oscillating member. A shaft 5 has secured thereto a feeler 6 and member 23 having a lug 23a disposed between a spring 25 and a screw 24 carried by a member 7 oscillated with a constant amplitude through a lever 9 by a link 10, so that the feeler 6 and member 23 are oscillated through a diminishing amplitude. as the height of the pile increases. A cam member 26 pivoted at 27 to the member 23 carries a screw 29 which is held by a spring 28 in contact with a shoulder 30 on the member 7. The member 26 also carries a screw 31 engaging a lever 20 which normally holds stationary a plate 13 carrying a ratchet pawl 14 co-operating with a ratchet-wheel 15. As the sheets are fed to the pile 17 the lower position of the feeler is gradually raised so that the member 26 turns about its pivot 27 until the screw 31 operates the lever 20 sufficiently to release the plate 13. The plate 13 then rotates counter-clockwise under the action of a spring 19 and is then returned to its initial position by a link 11 which is constantly oscillated by the lever 9. This action turns the ratchet-wheel and is repeated until the pile is lowered to such an extent that the lever 20 again retains the plate 13. The ratchet-wheel 15 is rotatably-mounted on the shaft 35 to which the sprocket-wheels of the chains 16 supporting the pile table are secured. The wheel 15 carries a pawl 38 engaging a ratchet-wheel 37 fast on the shaft 35, and is secured to a sleeve 42 held against free rotation by a brake 40. The weight of the pile tends to lower it but this is prevented by the pawl 38, ratchet-wheel 15 and brake, until the latter is overcome by the turning of the wheel 15 by the pawl 14. A hand-wheel 36 is provided on the shaft 35 to allow of the pile table being raised when desired. When a pile of sheets is removed, a grating 34 is inserted to receive the sheets delivered during such removal. If the pile delivered to the grating reaches an abnormal height, the cam member 26 is rotated about its pivot an amount sufficient for a screw 32 on the cam member to actuate a switch 33 which stops the machine.
