Abstract

678,669. Centrifugal pumps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 5, 1951 [April 19. 1950], No. 7920/51. Class 110(i) A centrifugal pump has a tangential outlet and an arcuate inlet passage which is preferably displaced from the outlet by an angle approximately equal to the angle between adjacent blades of the impeller. The inlet passage 11, Fig. 3, is curved in the direction of rotation of the impeller 4 and concentric therewith, with a minimum radius greater than that at the roots of the impeller blades 5. Its top wall 15 slopes downwardly towards the casing wall 16, so as to provide a decreasing cross-sectional area of flow. The end of the passage 11 is angularly adjacent to, and preferably normal to the axis of, the tangential outlet (not shown) of the volute chamber 3. An annular flange 17, by which the pump is attached to, say, the drainage opening of a washing machine, may house a strainer or vortex-preventing baffle or screen. Fig. 4 shows a circumferential-flow pump in which the two parts 20, 21 of the casing each comprise channels 25, 26 which extend for about 270 degrees and terminate in tubular fittings 27, 28. Each fitting serves as either inlet or outlet, depending on the direction of rotation of the impeller.
