Abstract

678,266. Hardening artificial stone. WILSON'S CAVICRETE, Ltd. Feb. 3,1949 [Feb. 4, 1948], No. 3234/48. Class 22 Hollow concrete blocks are cast in moulds so as to have two walls in superposed spaced relationship and connected by ties, and are hardened by introducing steam into the space between the walls so that the heat is conducted from the inside outwards. The moulds 10 are preferably aranged side by side, a side wall 13 of each mould being common to the adjacent mould, and being provided with openings whereby steam can pass from one to another. Openings for connection to a steam supply are provided at intervals, these being preferably oppositely-arranged pairs to facilitate distribution of the steam. Each mould is subdivided by division plates to enable a number of blocks to be cast side by side. In use, division plates 15 are placed in the lower part of the moulds and the concrete is poured in. An upper plate, constituted by two half plates 16 having mating serrated edges, is placed in position at the correct height and the connecting-ties 11 inserted in apertures 17 in the plates 16 to extend into the concrete in the lower part of the mould. Division plates 18 corresponding to the plates 15 are then placed in position and the concrete is filled in. Steam is supplied at 60-100 lb. per square inch pressure to heat the concrete to 70-80‹C. The upper wall of the mould may be sprayed to keep it moist.
