678,164. Vehicle wheels. ECKINGTON, F..J. April 18, 1950 [April 9, 1949], No. 9708/49. Class 144 (i). A resilient wheel comprises a single or twin pneumatic tyre fitted with an outer metal ring, interengaging flanges and grooves being provided on the wheel rim and the outer ring for lateral stability and to take the load on tyre deflation, the adjacent portions of the flanges and grooves having rubber facings. As shown in Fig. 1, the pneumatic tyre 2 is housed between flanges 3 projecting from the wheelbody 1 and freely engaging rubber-lined grooves 6 in a metal ring 4 fitted with a solid rubber tread 5. As shown at 5B, the ring 4 may have a flanged tread for use on rails. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the ring 4 has a median flange 3 arranged between twin tyres 2 and guided in a channel 6 on the wheel 1. To protect the pneumatic tyre from abrasion by the ring 4 and wheel rim, and to prevent creep, those parts (ring 4, wheel rim, and tyre 2) may be transversely corrugated and provided with intervening corrugated tape.
