Abstract
678,105. Lubricating. AUTO RESEARCH CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1950 [Jan. 11, 1949], No. 636/50. Class 12 (iii). Apparatus for creating a fog or mist of suspended oil particles in air within a closed housing D of a machine containing bearings to be lubricated comprises a reservoir A for carrying oil 11 and air under pressure above the oil, a power-driven pump B for delivering air and oil into the reservoir A from the housing D, and a fine orifice device C supplied with oil and air under pressure from the reservoir A. In operation the air pressure created in the reservoir A forces oil through tubes 20, 22 to a central nipple 36 in the device C, and air is forced through a tube 26 to a chamber 38 in the device C surrounding the nipple 36 whereby lubricant is dispersed in a fog into the housing D. Excess oil together with air is drawn through a tube 42 back to the pump B. In a modification a combined motor and air pump unit and atomizer unit are disposed above a lubricant reservoir formed in the base of the machine housing, and an oil filter is provided. In a further modification, a vane pump 113, Fig. 7, draws lubricant through a filter 132 and orifice 141 by aspiration of the air which is drawn through a venturi hole 120 producing a fog in the pump chamber 116. The fog is then discharged through a nipple 129. The vane pump may be disposed horizontally. Various other modifications of motor and pump units are described.
