676,982. Railway-vehicle axles. DEGERFORS JARNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG. Oct. 14, 1949 [Oct. 14, 1948], No. 26489/49. Class 103(vi) A railway vehicle axle has a portion 10, Fig. 2, which gradually increases in diameter from the journal 11 to the wheel seat 12, 12a, the hub of a press fitted wheel being indicated at 14, 14a. The radius of curvature r is made greater than 0.3 of d the diameter of the journal 11 in order to increase the strength of the axle. Fig. 3 shows one end of a tubular axle 15, having a wheel disc 3a attached by welding, and a portion 16 curving smoothly with a large radius into the journal 11a and a part 17. A bearing ring 18 of several or single piece construction may be pressed, shrunk or otherwise secured in position on the curved surface. In a modification an entire axle and wheel assembly constructed in accordance with Figs. 2, 3 has its central axle portion increasing gradually toward the wheels
