Abstract

676,927. Fluid-actuated valves. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL. Aug. 21, 1950, No. 20630/50. Class 135 [Also in Group XXVIII] An automatic unloading device for a multi-stage compressor comprises an unloading passage leading from the low pressure stage and a second unloading passage leading from a higher pressure stage and an unloading valve controlling the opening and closing of the passages and operable to open the latter in response to a drop in pressure in one of the stages. A two stage compressor has a low pressure cylinder connected through an intercooler with a high pressure cylinder 3 from which the compressed gas is delivered through a pipe and a non-return or stop valve. The unloading device comprises a slide valve 17 in a cylinder 16 communicating through a passage 25 with the cylinder 3 and through a passage 24, pipe 21, and the inter-cooler with the low-pressure cylinder. The inter-cooler has a small bleed vent for releasing the pressure therein when the compressor is stationary. During starting the slide valve 17 is moved by a spring 20 to the position indicated in chain-dotted lines whereby the passages 24, 25 are vented to the atmosphere through a port 28. The pressure built up in the inter-cooler acts, through a branch pipe 22 on the valve to move it to the left thus closing the passages 24, 25. The unloading device may alternatively be connected to the delivery pipe of the compressor.
