Abstract
676,767. Auxiliary engine and control mechanism for cycles. PIATTI, V. May 26, 1948 [June 2, 1947], No. 14278/48. Classes 79(iii) and 136(i) An engine unit for a bicycle comprises a support carrying the engine and a friction driving roller, the support being pivoted at one end to a bracket adapted to be connected to the bicycle frame so that the support projects away from the frame to overlie a bicycle wheel for the roller to frictionally drive the wheel, means supported from the frame to guide the end of the support remote from the pivot and hand-operated control means for pivotally moving the support to bring the roller into and out of engagement with the tyre. As shown the engine 20, the friction roller 3, and a fuel tank 8 are mounted on the support 1 which is pivoted at 2 to the bracket connected to the saddle pillar of the bicycle. An extension 25 of the support 1 receives a shank 11 connected to a fork 10 connected to the wheel spindle. A spring 4 bearing against a fixed abutment 26 on the shank 11 and the extension 25 urges the roller 3 into engagement with the tyre of the wheel 9. Connected to the abutment 26 is a cable 7 which is connected at its other end to a hand-lever 6 on the handle-bar of the bicycle, the cable being enclosed in a sheath 5 and operation of the lever 6 effects disconnection of the roller 3 from the tyre against the action of the spring 4. Pivoted to the hand lever 6 is a latch 27 for holding the lever 6 in an actuated position. Specification 124,758, [Class 79(ii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the 3 being constructed of a heat conducting and non-abrasive alloy of copper, iron, aluminium and nickel and a heat resistant disc 13<SP>1</SP> of, for example, ebonite being disposed between the hub 13 of the roller and the engine crankshaft. The web portion 15 can be made of thinnest section consistent with rigidity and/or can be provided with holes. The rim portion 16 of the roller is provided with cavities 14 of conical or truncated conical crosssection acting as suction caps on a smooth tyre. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
