Abstract
653,158. Motor attachments for cycles. LATTA, J. Oct. 7, 1948, No. 26197. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a motor-assisted bicycle the tyre of a road wheel is driven from the motor by means of a roller formed of at least two cylindrical driving surfaces of different diameters with a short intermediate coned portion between adjacent driving surfaces, the roller being capable of substantially axial movements to bring a driving surface of a different diameter into contact with the tyre to vary the speed ratio between the motor and wheel and the coned portion being brought into contact with the tyre during such movement to cause the speed variation to be effected gradually. As shown the motor 1 is mounted on an arm 3 which is connected by a bracket 2c with a similar arm 3. The bracket carries the friction driving roller as a continuation of the main shaft of the motor and can be engaged with the tyre 4 of the front wheel of the bicycle 5. Alternatively the motor can drive the rear wheel. The roller is formed of the cylindrical portions 2, 2a interconnected by the coned portion 2b. Alternatively the roller can be formed of a larger number of cylindrical portions. The arms 3 are carried on rods 6 along which they are displacable by means of a double Bowden cable 10 operated by a hand lever secured to the handlebars of the bicycle in order to move the motor and roller along an axis substantially parallel to the wheel axle, thus bringing different portions of the roller into contact with the tyre 4 to vary the speed ratio, the rods 6 being carried by brackets 7 secured to the wheel forks 8. The arms 3 are each connected by a spring 12 to a bracket 13 on the wheel fork or to the wheel axle in order to urge the roller into contact with the tyre. The springs 12 are arranged so that they can be released when the motor is not required for use, the arms 3 being then pivoted about the rods 6 into a position in which the roller is not in contact with the tyre. In a modification the roller can be moved across the tyre by sliding it along a keyed driving shaft, the motor being secured in a stationary position relative to the bicycle frame.
