Abstract
676,664. Tubular heat-exchangers. BREADY HOLDING CORPORATION. March 21. 1950, No. 7019/50. Class 64(iii) A heat exchanger in particular for liquids, comprises a plurality of series-connected jacket pipes 25-30 (Fig. 1) through each of which a set of tubes 31 (Fig 3) extends, a tube in one set being connected either to another tube in the same set or to a corresponding tube in another set by bent or elbowed tubes provided externally of the jacket pipes and having a cross-section substantially the same as that of the tubes 31. In Figs 1 and 3 the sets of tubes 31 in adjacent jacket pipes are provided at each end with tube plates 33 and are interconnected by sets of U-tubes 36 united at their ends to tube plates 35 which are bolted together with the tube plates 33 to flanges 32 provided at each end of the jacket pipes. Alternatively (Fig. 9) the tubes within the jacket pipes may extend back and forth within the same pipe e.g. from an elbow 54, through the jacket pipe 50 to return bends 56 and back through the same jacket pipe to the elbow 55. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement for heating water in a laundry by hot waste water. The valves 45 and 22 are normally closed and the valves 49, 21 are normally left open. Hot waste water is drawn from a sump 10 by the pump 17 and passes to a header 23, and thence in series through the pipes 31 of each jacket pipe to a header 24 leading to the waste pipe 47. Meanwhile fresh water to supply the laundry washing machines flows through the jacket pipes in series from an inlet 39 to an outlet 38 leading to the point of use. By closing the valves 49 and 21 and opening the valves 45, 22 the flow of hot waste water through the pipes ment which may have collected in the header 23. An arrangement for automatically and periodically reversing the flow of hot waste water through the pipe 31 is described Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown), and in this form the jacket pipes and their associated tubes 31 are arranged in two adjacent banks. In an arrangement Fig. 10 (not shown) for cooling mash and mixing slop and. mash in a distilling process, slop is cooled in one set of tubes and jacket pipes and is mixed with mash entering a further set of tubes and jacket pipes, cooling water passes serially through both sets of jacket pipes, a connection being made from the water supply pipe to the inlet pipe leading to the sets of tubes so that the tubes may be flushed out when required.
