Abstract

422,571. Water heaters; field-tube heat-exchangers. HOWLETT, E. J., 18, Grove Road, North Finchley, London. July 12, 1933, No. 19751. [Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii)] A multi - tubular heat - exchange apparatus in which a fluid to be heated or cooled flows and returns through tubes L, M one surrounding the other, and a liquid flows in a compartment D surrounding the tubes in contra-flow to the fluid in the outer tubes. Water is fed at B to the top of compartments D to flow thermo-siphonically down transversely to the tubes, and rises from the base through a duct F in a partition wall E into the tops of similar compartments D with ducts F to pass to an outlet C. The vertical headers G, which lie at the same ends of the compartments, are divided by a vertical partition K into two cells H, J from which the outer tubes L and inner tubes M respectively extend horizontally. The headers are connected by pipes Q so that liquid in the tubes L is always in contra-flow to that in compartments D. The ducts F are at alternate ends of the walls E and have openings at the top at one side and at the bottom of the other, so that water always overflows at the top. The bottom openings may have sluice gates for cleaning. The tubes L are supported at their outer ends by a plate N.
