656,676. Milk, wort and other film coolers. OLDHAM, J. Oct. 8, 1948, No. 26316. [Class 64(iii)] In a heat-exchanger in which liquid such as milk or ice-cream mix is heated or cooled by flowing under gravity successively over a plurality of conduits 9 arranged horizontally in a vertical plane for conveying heating or cooling fluid, from an inlet header 7 to an outlet header (not shown), the rate of fluid flow is varied from conduit to conduit. This variation is achieved by a graduation of the sizes of metering holes 19 in a wall of a header, which holes communicate with the conduits and are provided in either or both of the headers. If applied to both headers the graduation is in the opposite direction in one header to the other. As shown in Fig. 2, cooling is in two stages, by means. of an upper tube bank 5 which is watercooled and a lower bank 6 cooled by ethyl chloride. The heat-exchanger may be one of a battery of such exchangers for first heating and then cooling a liquid.
