Abstract
676,334. Centrifugal casting-machines. CITO, C. May 26, 1950 [June 8, 1949], No. 13302/50. Class 83 (i). A centrifugal casting machine comprises a mould having cheeks 3 and 4 and a cylindrical wall 5 with external cooling fins 6, rotated about a horizontal axis by means including a variable speed device 11 and a source of heat such as electrodes 18, 18<SP>1</SP> in the central zone of the mould. The mould is mounted on rollers 7, 8 on shafts 9, 10, the shaft 9 being driven by a motor 12 through variable speed gearing 11 and being coupled by a belt 14 to a blower 13 by which cooling air is directed on to the fins 6 in a direction opposed to the direction of rotation of the mould. For casting steel the inside of the mould is coated with a refractory layer and heated to about 400‹ C. Steel is then poured in, first rapidly and then as slowly as possible at between 1500‹ and 1600‹ C., the rate of cooling being controlled by varying the speed of rotation of the mould and the position of the valve 17 so as to keep the mould at about 550-600‹ C.
