Abstract

676,226. Bottling. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. May 24, 1949 [May 26, 1948], No. 13890/49. Class 125(ii) In a bottling machine comprising a base 32 carrying a rotatable table 34 having sockets 48 for the stems 56 of bottle rests 50 elevated either by springs 52 or by fluid pressure and guided during their movement by vertical rods 82, the depression of the rests is effected by a cam rail 90 having horizontal and inclined parts which are engaged by a block 68 having facets 92a corresponding in slope to the slope of the parts of the cam. The rods 82 are engaged by the side faces of a block 70 keyed by dowels 80 to the block 68, the , blocks 68, 70 being carried by a bolt 74 on the projection 66 of a sleeve 64 threaded on to the ste m56. The end of the bolt 74 enters a hole 78 in the stem 56 to prevent rotation of the blocks about the stem 56. The lower face of the block 68 carries facets 92b identical to the facets 92a. When the blocks 68, 70 wear they can be rotated through 180 degrees and 90 degrees respectively to bring the new surfaces into engagement with the cam rail 90 and the rods 82. The stem 56 is lubricated, Fig. 7, by two handoperated jets 112 which squit oil into a peripheral slot 110 in a sleeve 60 depending from the socket 48 and having a sloping groove 114 conveying oil around the stem 56. The bearing for the table on the base may be constructed as described in Specification 676,289. The Specification also describes improvements in the snifting arrangements for the filling head and in the counterpressure trip. Counterpressure trip, Fig. 10. A plunger 164 in a casing 161 fixed to the base of the machine normally projects into the path of an arm on a filling head to admit counterpressure to the bottle being filled. When, however, a rest approaches the trip without a bottle, the rest rises higher than usual and engages a lug to close an electric switch to energize a solenoid 172. The armature 178 is connected by a swivel pin 188 to a rod 192 which is thus retracted and, through a spring 196, withdraws the plunger 164 from the path of the filling head arm against a spring 180. The spring 196 prevents over-load on the solenoid if the plunger 164 should bind in the casing 161. Snifting device, Fig. 12. The filling head comprises a nozzle 212, a valve body 200 and a valve plate 214 rotated by an arm 166. A sleeve 216 is screwed into the body 200 and has a bore 236 through which extends a rod 218 having a reduced portion within the bore 236 and carrying a valve closure 222. At the appropriate point of rotation of the head, the end 224 is pressed in by a projection on the machine base to open the valve 222 whereupon the bottle is snifted through passages 242, 217, 236, 246 and 250. The latter extends towards the axis of the machine. The snift valve is closed by a spring 234. Specifications 522,229, 522,297 and 559,079 also are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the subjectmatter of Specification 676,289. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
