BUNGHOLE-CLOSURE.
Application filed August 14, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, For H. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dedham, in the county of Norfolk and State of lilassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bunghole-Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.-
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bung hole closures, and is an improvement upon my Patent No. 1.24:1,757, granted to me October 2, 1917, the object being to improve the general construction and to provide means for moving the closure over the opening n such a manner that the gasket around the opening is not subjected to pressure until the closure has been placed in its proper position.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide a device which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which can be used in connection with receptacles of various kinds, the device having a plate for attaching the same to the receptacle in position over the opening thereof.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth an d the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
Tn the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the closure in open position;
Fig. 2 is an elevation in closed position; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out invention I em loy a plate 1 which is adapted to be secured to the receptacle 2 by screws 3, said plate having an opening 4 adapted to register with the opening in the receptacle 2. the opening 4t beinsr surrounded by an annular groove 5 in which is arranged the gasket 6, herein shown as constructed of cork.
Arranged below the opening is a spout 7 for leadingthe contents of the re eptacle into the receptacle to be filled. Extending outwardly from the plate 1 is a bolt 8 on which is pivotally mounted a lever 9, said lever being held in spaced relation to the plate by washer 10. Said bolt carries a washer 11 on the outer face of the lever, as clearly shown, "for allowing the lever to swing freely on the bolt,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 317,551.
Lever 9 is provided with an enlarged portion 12 having a slot 13 through which extends a stem 14 carried by a circular closure member 15 which is undercut, as shown at 16, on its inner face in order to produce a annular shoulder which is adapted to cooperate with the gasket 6, as will be hereinfter fully described.
A stem 14: is provided with a transverse pening through which extends a cotter pin. 17 securing a sleeve 18 in position on the stem, as clearly shown, so as to support the closure member in such a manner that it is free to move independent of the lever within the slot. member by gravity drops in position over the opening t so as to close the opening.
The lever 9 extends under a guide bar 19 supported on plate 1 by bolt 20 and is provided with handle 21 for swinging the lever on its pivot 8. The lever is provided with a cam 23 secured to bevel face 22 which is adapted to cooperate with a bolt 23 adjust-ably mounted on the guide 19 and locked by nuts 2%, and as the closure 15 is free to move independent of the lever .by the movement of the lever downwardly, the closure drops into position over the opening 4 so that when the cam face of the, lever is brought into engagement with the bolt 23, the closure will be forced against the gasket 6 so as to form a tight joint to prevent any leakage.
By providing adjusting means the desired pressure can be obtained and as the end of the bolt wears the same can be readjusted so as to keep the closure in contact with the gasket under the desired pressure. The guideway is so positioned in respect to the lever that when the lever is moved into the position shown in Fig. 1 the closure will be held out of alinement with the opening of the plate, and as the lever is moved clownwardly the stem of the closure travels in the slot so that the closure will be held out of alineinent with the opening of the plate, and
Patented J an. 6, 192 1).
By this construction the closure as the lever is moved downwardly the stem of the closure travels in the slot so that the closure is in position over the opening before pressure is applied by the lever through the medium of the cam and bolt whereby the gasket is prevented from being injured in the movement of the closure over the same.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a bung hole closure in which the movable closure member is slidably mounted on a lever so that the same is free to move independent of the lever which allows the closure member to drop into position over the outlet opening before pressure is applied thereto by the lever.
What I claim is:
1. In a device or" the kind described, comprising a plate having an opening adapted to be secured over the opening of the receptacle, a lever pivotally mounted on said plate, a closure member slidably mounted on said lever, said lever having a cam portion, ane an adjustable member arranged in the path of travel of the said cam portion for forcing said member into contact with said plate under pressure.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising a plate having an opening surrounded by a gasket, a lever pivotally mounted on said plate, a closure member slidaloly mounted on said lever, a guide for said lever, and an adjustable member carried by said guide, said lever having a cam portion cooperating with said adjustable member for forcing said closure member into engagement with said asket.
3. A device of the kind described, comprisiiw a plate adapted to be secured to a receptacle and provided with an opening registering with the opening in the receptacle, a lever pivotally mounted on sand plate, a guideway for said lever, an adjustable member carried by said guideway, said lever having a cam portion adapted to be en gaged by said adjustable member, and a closure member slidably carried by said lever,
said closure member being free to move into position over the opening in said plate independent of said lever.
4. A device of the kind described, comprising a plate having an opening provided with a dischar e spout, gaskets surrounding said opening, a lever pivotally mounted on said plate having a guideway therefor, said lever having a slot, a closure member having a stem extending through said slot, said lever having a cam portion, and a bolt adjustably mounted in said guideway adapted to engage the cam portion of said lever for :lorcing said closure into engagement with said gasket when said closure inber is moved into position over said opening.
5. A device of the kind described comprising a plate having an opening, a lever pivotally lllOllllll'EBCl on said plate to one side of said opening, said lever having a transversely arranged slot, a closure member pro vided with a stem slidably mounted in said slot and arranged to move by gravity in position over said opening, a guide for said lever having an adjustable member and a cam formed on said lever, adapted to be engaged by said adjustable member for forcing closure when in closed position over said opening.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
