Abstract
676,207. Jointing; making compound forms. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., and TAIT, W. H. Jan. 13, 1950 [Jan. 13, 1949], No. 973/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A piece of metal is joined to a piece of softer metal by removing most of the oxide skin from the faces to be joined by chemical or mechanical means, e.g. by a scratch brush, and then bringing these into mutual contact with such rapidity and force that the softer metal is driven into any irregularities in the face of the harder metal. This may be given a suitable face as described in Specification 676,209, [Group XXX], or by spraying or sintering thereon the same metal or one having an affinity therefor to form a layer say 0.01 inch thick. The harder metal may comprise steel and after spraying a loose porous layer of steel thereon may be dusted with fine copper powder and heated to 1100‹ C. for 5 minutes in hydrogen to braze the layer to the steel. The soft metal may be aluminium containing 10 per cent of tin with or without such other elements as silicon, copper, nickel and magnesium and its face may be cleaned by a rotary scratch brush, brought at once into contact with the prepared face of the hard metal and the two forced together by a drop-stamp, quick acting press or the like. If desired, the operations may be carried out in nitrogen &c. and the parts may be heated. Making bearings.-The compound material may be used for bearings.
