Abstract
758,545. Powder metallurgy. NIPPON SODA CO., Ltd. Feb. 15, 1954 [March 5, 1953], No. 4416/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). Billets are made by filling comminuted or powdered metal, metal mixtures or alloys, into a casing, heating and exhausting the container and applying impulsive force to the surface of the casing while continuing its exhaustion and maintaining it at a temperature which softens the metal. A temperature of from one-half to two-thirds of the melting point of the metal or alloy is suitable. In an example, 8Kg. powdered titanium was put into a casing 5.5 inches diameter and 13 inches long, of carbon steel 6 mm. thick, the casing was exhausted while being heated to 900-1000‹ C. and a hammer of #th ton was applied at the rates of 180 strokes per minute four'times with intermediate reheating, for a total time of five minutes. In another example, nickel powder was placed in a casing of Cr-Ni stainless steel which was exhausted while heating to 730-930‹ C., hammered as before and finally annealed for one hour at 750‹ C. Other examples are given for iron, tantalum, zinc, aluminium, copper and zinc, nickel and manganese, titanium and copper, titanium and manganese. Examples are also given of the production of billets from titanium and nickel in scrap form, the scrap being cleaned and washed, crushed and treated by a magnetic separator for the removal of iron before being filled into the casing.
