Abstract

A bearing is made by roughening the bearing shell as by shot blasting or etching, tinning it, and then applying white-metal (i.e. Sn-base or Pb-base alloy) thereto by spraying, the tinned surface being treated with an oxide-removing flux immediately prior to, or during, the spraying. The flux-treatment may be effected by (1) moistening the surface with HCl prior to spraying, (2) including HCl gas in the spraying gas, or (3) including NH4Cl powder in powdered white-metal used for spraying. The bearing may be finally subjected to mechanical working and heat-treatment. In the example, a steel shell is shot blasted, etched with NHO3, fluxed with ZnCl2 solution, tinned by dipping into molten Sn, wiped over with HCl, spray-coated with white-metal, worked by hammering, shot peening or rolling, and finally heat-treated.
