Abstract
676,098. Springs; road-vehicle spring-suspensions. SPENCER MOULTON & CO., Ltd., G., and MOULTON, A. E. Oct. 6, 1950 [Nov. 12, 1948; Aug. 10, 1949], Nos. 29439/48 and 20802/49. Classes 108(ii) and 108(iii) A rubber torsional shear spring comprises a rubber body 1 bonded continuously around the periphery of an inner metallic element or shaft 2, and to an outer element or shell 3 which is of deformable troughlike section so that there is an unbonded portion of rubber across the mouth of the trough. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 as applied to a vehicle wheel suspension, the shell 3 has flanges 4, 5 for bolting to a plate 11 rigid with the vehicle frame. This applies a pre-compression to the rubber at 6, the degree of which may be adjusted by the insertion of packing strips 10. The rubber may be bonded to the central portion of the plate 11. According to second Provisional Specification, the rubber surface may be convex at 6 and concave adjacent the flanges 4, 5, and may be of nearly annular cross section. The plate 11 may be complementarily shaped to the rubber. Also according to the second Specification, when the shell is thick in relation to its diameter, the shell may be pressed into its closed position and is opened during moulding by the top of the mould. The plate 11 may be riveted to the flanges 4, 5 or may be welded to them as described in Specification 676, 190. The end surfaces of the rubber comprise a central cone of 50-60 degrees apical-angle blending into the outer shell with a radius and with short skin on the inner shaft. The shell 3 may have integral or welded ribs, or may be corrugated. The flanges 4, 5 may alternatively be disposed parallel with one another, Figs 3, 4, (not shown )and are then bolted by respective or common sets of bolts to a frame member of channel cross section. In another construction, Fig. 5, (not shown), the flanges 4, 5 are disposed substantially at right angles to one another. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the shell 3 is integral with components 29, 30 which is then bolted together form a torque arm, and have rubber lined cupped extremities 32, 33 which form a pin-receiving eye.
