Abstract

An alloy steel contains 0.18 per cent carbon, 0.16 per cent silicon, 1.1 per cent manganese, 0.5 per cent nickel, 0.25 per cent molybdenum, 0.28 per cent copper, 0.1 per cent vanadium and 0.1 per cent chromium and its ultimate tensile strength, in an annealed condition, is 93,000 pounds per square inch. An extra mild steel alloy contains 0.08 per cent carbon, 0.02 per cent sulphur, 0.03 per cent phosphorus and 0.3 per cent manganese and its ultimate tensile strength is 60,000 pounds per square inch. The mild steel may contain from 0.03 to 0.13 per cent of carbon and, at a maximum, 0.6 per cent of manganese and 0.2 per cent of silicon.
