Abstract
Curved polymethacrylate articles, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate watch glasses and lenses, are tempered by inserting in a frame and heating the convex face to at least the softening-point whilst maintaining the main mass below the softening temperature. The concave surface may be simultaneously cooled with water, cold air or by application of a cold, heat-conducting object. Heat may be applied by paraffin oil, hot air or combustion gases, or by passing through a flame. Preferably the article is cooled, e.g. with cold water, immediately after the heat treatment.
