Abstract

675,016. Partitions. WILLIAMS & WIL. LIAMS, Ltd. Dec. 28, 1950 [Dec. 28, 1949], No. 33109/49. Classes 20(iii) and 20(iv) A partitioning apparatus for buildings comprises a head member 1 adapted to engage a ceiling 3 with means 2 to grip the ceiling and a downwardly facing rail or channel like recess 4, a series of socket members 5 adapted to slide along the rail 4 and each having a socket 5b, and a series of vertical supporting members each carrying at the upper end a spring pressed bolt member 18 which at its upper end engages a socket 5b in a member 5 and exerts an upward thrust on the head member while simultaneously pressing the lower end of the vertical supporting member into contact with the floor, the edge portions of sheet partitioning material being received in side channels 10, 11 in adjacent vertical supporting members. Each vertical support comprises a top-hat section member 7 with a wider shallow channel section member 8 rigidly connected to the flanged side and a similar member 9 detachably secured on the opposite side to form the recesses 10, 11. Outer cover plates 13, 14 in contact with the floor surround the lower ends of members 8, 9.. The bolt 18 engaging a threaded collar 20, which is restrained from turning by the sides of channel 7, and sliding in sockets 17, 21 fixed to the channel 7 has a head 22 and a spigot 23 which passes through a hole in a U-shaped plate 24 to engage in the socket 5b in a member 5. The plate 24 is connected by screws 25 to outer cover plates 26, 27 forming a telescopic element which slides over the upper end of the pillar: A helical spring 19 surrounds the bolt 18 and bears on socket 17 and collar 20 so that the plates 26, 27 are held against the head member 1 and the pads 2, 12 pressed against the ceiling and floor. Horizontal H-section connecting bars 35 are interposed between adjacent pillars, and the edges of the sheet material are received in the channels of the horizontal and vertical members. Thick sheets 30 substantially fill the channels and may be packed with rubber &c. capping 33, but thinner sheets 31, which may be of glass, are received in rubber &c. channel section packing pieces 34 engaged in the supporting channels. Clips 38 detachably secured to the members 7. may be used to secure the panels before the members 9 are fitted into position. Doors may be supported from the pillars.
