Abstract
674,624. Friction clutches and brakes. TAYLOR, L. March 31, 1949 [March 12, 1948], No. 7554/48. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] In fluid-pressure-operated multi-plate clutches or brakes, the shaft is journalled through a ball bearing in a fixed bearing housing which is formed with, or rotatably carries, the cylinder to which pressure fluid is supplied from a pipe through a duct in the bearing housing. In a double clutch between a shaft 17, Fig. 2, and gears 14, each annular piston 7 is slidable in a cylinder 21 of channel section 'rotatable in a common bearing housing 19 which is fixed in a casing 20 and in which the shaft 17 is journalled through a ball bearing 18. Pressure fluid to engage the two clutches against the action of disengaging springs is supplied through separate pipes 9. As applied to a brake, the shaft 23, Fig. 3, is journalled through a ball bearing 24 in a housing 25 secured in. a casing 26 and the fluid cylinder 31 is formed in a cover member 30 attached to the housing 25. Pressure fluid to engage the brake is supplied through a pipe 36. Alternatively, the arrangement may be such that the cylinder and piston rotate with the shaft, Fig. 5, (not shown), or such that fluid pressure disengages the brake against the action of engaging springs, Fig. 6' (not shown). In a combined clutch and brake, a clutch 40, Fig.. 4, between a shaft 37 and a pulley 42'is arranged within a fixed bearing housing 46 in. which the shaft is carried by a ball bearing 50, pressure fluid being supplied to engage the clutch through a pipe 51, while pressure fluid to engage a brake 56 between the shaft 57 and the housing 46 is supplied through a pipe 53. In a,modified form, Fig. 8 (not shown), pressure fluid supplied through a single pipe acts on separate pistons to engage the clutch and disengage the brake. In the combined clutch and brake shown in Fig. 9, pressure fluid supplied through a. pipe 98 to a single rotating. cylinder 91 actuates a piston 93 connected by rods 97 to a pressure plate 96 so as to engage the clutch 94 and disengage the brake 95 against the action of springs 99.
