Abstract
674,399. Making turbines. AKTIEBOLAGET KARLSTADS MEKANISKA WERKSTAD. April 24, 1950 [Jan. 24, 1950], No. 10047/50. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group XXVI] A method of manufacturing Francis turbine runners in which the rim and the blades are made separately and then welded together is characterized in that the rim and/or the blades is or are provided, on the parts liable to corrosion, with welded linings of corrosion-resistant material. A cast steel rim 1 has recesses 5, corresponding to the number of blades, cut in its interior surface, the side 9 of the recess conforming to the blade contour. The rim is rotated about a horizontal or inclined axis an stainless steel is welded into the recesses by means of an electrode. The rim is then clamped to a table 17 and the welded fillings are turned down with a tool 19 and finally polished. The recesses may be omitted, in which case the linings are chamfered by grinding. The linings are applied to the blades by clamping flat blades 21 in a vertical turning lathe (Fig. 2) and recessing each blade over an area 31 (Fig. 3) to the thickness of the welded lining. The recesses are filled with stainless steel as were those in the rim and the blades machined and bent to shape. When assembling the runner, the blades are supported by a disc 33 and tackwelded to the rim 1 after which the hub of the runner (not shown) is welded to the blades and finally the blades are welded to the rim, using stainless steel electrodes. The rim only may be coated and the blades made from stainless steel. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 636,084.
