Abstract

587,854. Milling-cutters. OSBORN & CO., Ltd., S., and HULSE, W. Jan. 23, 1945, No. 1812. [Class 83 (iii)] A milling-cutter has a circular body 10 with lugs 12 arranged round the periphery for the attachment of circular cutters 14 comprising a bossed disc 17, Fig. 5, to which a ring 19 of hard cutting metal, such as tungsten carbide, is welded or brazed, coinciding radial grooves 23 being provided in the ring and disc to receive the welding or brazing material. Each cutter is secured to a lug by a screw 15 which is locked by a grub-screw 16a, and, when the section in use becomes worn, the cutter can be rotated to bring an unworn section into use. Cutting clearance is provided by the frusto-conical shape of the cutter ring and disc and positive or negative rake by the seating surface of each lug being disposed at the appropriate angle to a radial plane through the lug and by the inclination of the face 18 of the cutter, which may be perpendicular to the axis of the cutter, as in Fig. 5, or inclined outwardly or inwardly.
