674,290. Echo-sounding and distancemeasuring apparatus. SIMONSEN RADIO AKTIESELSKAPET. June 20, 1950. [June 24, 1949] No. 15430/50. Class 118 (ii). [Also in Group XIX] In an echo-sounding recorder of the type wherein the driving shaft of the instrument rotates to make a recording pencil pass across a moving paper tape the mechanism is arranged so that the pencil performs a rectilinear movement across the paper tape. The rotating shaft 1 carries an arm 4 on which a carrier 7 for the pencil 3 is pivoted at point 5. The point 8 on the pencil carrier 7 is guided in a path 9 by means of a roller 10 adapted to follow a correspondingly formed rail, or the roller 10 may be spring-loaded to keep it in engagement with the circumference of a cam disc conforming to the path 9. The curvature of path 9 is such that the carrier 7 in moving from the position shown in full lines to that shown chaindotted causes the pencil 3 to move in a straight path across a paper tape 2, the pencil then returning to its first position by a nondescript path (not indicated). The useful part of the guide 9 may consist of different radii of curvature to give the pencil a greater velocity in the earlier part of its travel. The guided point 8 may be on the same side of point 5 as, or even coincide with, the pencil 3.
