[Class 97 (ii)] Means for indicating and recording the course including both the direction of travel according to compass bearing and the approximate distance travelled by an aircraft relatively to the air comprises means for automatically turning a map in conformity with changes of compass bearing and moving it in timed relationship with the speed of the aircraft relatively to the air. The map 20 is mounted on a table 1 and is movable in any direction by being carried by rotatable rollers 33, 34 slidable endwise on shafts 35, 36. A toothed roller 21 carried by a mounting 7 engages the map 20 through the table 1 and moves it in the direction of travel of the aircraft since the roller 21 is oriented by the mounting 7 according to compass bearing of the travel direction the mounting 7 being rotated by means of a gear 8 in accordance with a master or repeater compass. The mounting 7 is also provided with a solenoid 10 to which electric impulses are imparted in accordance with the speed of the aircraft. The core 17 withdraws a needle 19 which has perforated the map to indicate the aircraft's position, the withdrawal rocking a lever 22 to lift the toothed wheel 21 into engagement with the map 20 and subsequently by means of a disc 26 rotating the wheel 21 to move the map. At the end of the impulse the needle 19 re-perforates the map to indicate the new position and lowers the wheel 21 out of engagement with the map.
