Apparatus for continuously recording the value of an oscillatory variable in accordance with 'which a recording arm f is positioned comprises a recording strip a driven at constant speed past an edge b around which an ink ribbon c is driven at such an angle to the strip a as to avoid obscuring the trace rubbed thereon by the arm f. By sufficiently rounding off the edge b the ink ribbon c may approach the strip a perpendicularly without causing ink to spray off and blot the record. A lamp m throws a shadow of the arm f against the strip a to indicate the value even when the strip a is stationary and no trace can be seen.
