Abstract

A wear-resistant material comprises a relatively hard and wear-resistent component constituted by a carbide, nitride, silicide or boride, of one or more of the metals tungsten, molybdenum, or titanium formed by casting, bonded but not alloyed with a relatively soft component which comprises copper or a copper-based alloy or an alloy based on iron, cobalt, nickel, niobium or titanium. Preferred materials are a corrosion resistant copper nickel alloy, and a scale resistant cobalt-chromium-titanium alloy. Composite bodies may be made from a core of very hard material such as cemented carbide which is sheathed with the wear - resistant material of the invention and then covering the whole with the soft component alone. Alternatively, one end of a cylindrical body may comprise a core of the hard material which is sheathed in wear-resistant material while the other end may be of the soft component.
