This invention" relates to a hard wear resisting alloy such as is applied to surfaces of tools and the like which are subject to wear and It is an object of the invention to provide a hard alloy which is also tough and resistant to shock stresses of mechanical orthermal origin and thus not easily broken or shattered when employed on scrapers, cutters,.b,earings, nozzles, and the like.
I desire to provide hard facing memher s which can be precast and fixed in position upon tools and devices by copper brazing.
My tough and wear resistant alloy has, as its principal hard ingredient about 16% o! tungsten. This substance is fused together with other metals which serve to render the resulting alloy particularly toughand not liable to shatter.
The elements making up my improved alloy may vary somewhat as to proportions. The following table shows the metals in the proportions found most eilective' Iron, balance to make 100% in all These metals may be fused together at a temperature 01' about 2300 to 2400 F.
I contemplate applying this alloy by first caste ing the alloy in the shape desired whether in Per cent Carbon 1.00 to 4.00 Manganese 0.50 to 2.00 Silicon 0.50 to 2.00 Chr 2.00 to f 6.00 Moly 3.50 to 6.50 Tungsten 14.00 to 18.00
Balance iron to make up 100%.
2. A wear resisting alloy made up of the following elements fused together in proportions approximately as set forth below:
Carbon l/z%; manganese and silicon each from 0.50% to 2.00% {chromium and molybdenum each 5.00%; tungsten from 14.00% to 18.00%, and iron to make 100%.
