A dry composition containing a water-sensitive medicament and capable of being transformed into an ointment by the addition of water is prepared by mixing powdered sodium carboxymethylcellutose, a powdered swellable clay, a solid wetting agent, a powdered preservative and, if desired, a sugar diluent, heating the resulting mixture at a sterilization temperature for at least one hour, cooling, adding a powdered buffering agent and a water-sensitive medicament and grinding the resulting mixture to a particle size not greater than 70 microns in diameter. If desired, the preservative may be added after the sterilization step. It is preferred to sterilize at 130 to 150‹ C. for two hours. The clay may be fuller's earth, Georgia clay or bentonite, which is preferred. Specified wetting agents are salts of 6 to 20 carbon atom chain alkyl sulphates e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate; alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids and salts thereof e.g. dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid, salts of sulphosuccinic acid; salts of aryl alkyl ether sulphates; sulphonated naphthalene alkyl ethers. The preferred preserving agent is p-hydroxybenzoic acid, but esters of vanillic may be used. The buffer may be any solid watersoluble non-toxic anhydrous organic acid e.g. citric and tartaric acids, which will buffer the prepared ointment at pH 6.0 to 6.5. Lactose is the preferred diluent, but other sugars may be used. In one example the medicament is bacitracin, and in the other potassium penicillin-G.
