Abstract

Natural or delinted cotton seeds are dressed before sowing with a finely pulverulent dressing comprising a mixture of paraformaldehyde and a fungicidal copper compound, preferably at least 10 per cent. of each being present, which dressing may be applied at the rate of 1 part by weight to between 150 and 300 parts by weight of seed. The copper compound may be cuprous oxide, copper ocychloride or copper carbonate. The composition may also include diluents, e.g. china clay, diatomaceous earth or talc, a mineral oil, and an insecticide, e.g. gamma benzene hexachloride. Examples of suitable dressings are given. Specification 727,241, [Group VI], is referred to.ALSO:Seed dressing for the control of seed-borne fungal and bacterial diseases of cotton comprises finely pulverulent compositions in which the active material is a mixture of paraformaldehyde and a fungicidal copper compound preferably at least 10 per cent. of each being present. Diluents such as china clay, diatomaceous earth or talc may also be included. The copper compound is preferably cuprous oxide but other known fungicidal copper salts such as the oxychloride or carbonate may be used. The cuprous oxide may have been previously incorporated with other materials according to its method of preparation, e.g. when precipitated from a solution of a copper salt the oxide is sometimes milled before drying with a suitable dispersing agent such as the salts, e.g. Na, Ca or Mg salts, of the mixture of lignin sulphonic acids derived from sulphite cellulose liquors (convenient preparations of which are sold under the RTM Goulac), the dispersing agent then forming a considerable part of the diluent material and only a small proportion of added diluent is then required. A water-soluble inorganic salt may be added to the commercial cuprous oxide not previously mixed with dispersing agents as described in Specification 727,241 to improve its fungicidal activity. A mineral oil in small amounts may be added to cause the composition to adhere to the seeds and to reduce the dust hazard when the dressing is applied and small quantities of an insecticide such as gamma benzene hexachloride may also be included.
