Abstract

673,204. Electrolytic production of stainless steel powder. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1951 [Feb. 4, 1950; Oct. 11, 1950], Nos. 2939/50 and 24785/50. Class 41. A method of producing stainless steel powder comprises heat-treating stainless steel in massive form in order to precipitate carbides on the grain boundaries of the steel, immersing the steel so treated in an electrolytic bath and utilizing the steel as an electrode to induce intergranular attack therein. The method may comprise heating stainless steel in massive form to a temperature above 1000‹ C., allowing the steel to cool to about room temperature, heating it again to a temperature between 500‹ and 800‹ C., substantially maintaining the temperature for a period from one hour to forty hours to precipitate carbides on the grain boundaries, pickling the steel so treated and then immersing it in an electrolytic bath so that it is alternately anode and cathode. Alternatively a plurality of such stainless steel electrodes may be grouped in pairs, each electrode of each pair being alternately connected as anode to, and disconnected from a source of electrical energy, the cathode being a hollow lead cathode through which is circulated cold water. Suitable electrolytes include sulphuric acid with crystals of copper sulphate, mercuric sulphate or potassium dichromate, hydrofluoric acid with sulphuric acid or nitric acid, hydrochloric acid with crystals of copper chloride, and sulphuric acid or orthophosphoric acid with hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide or copper sulphate crystals may be added to any of the electrolytes mentioned above, where they are not already included, and ethyl alcohol may be added to solutions of sulphuric acid and copper sulphate or hydrofluoric acid.
